Your Women's Wetsuit Guide for Surfing

Most women's suits on the market run $110 to $300. The best women's wetsuits land in the middle of that range, where you get sealed seams and good neoprene without paying for pro-level features you will never notice.

Thickness and Water Temperature

Wetsuit thickness is measured in millimeters. A 2mm spring suit handles water above 65°F, typical summer in Southern California. A 3/2mm full suit covers the 55-65°F range for fall and spring sessions. Drop below 55°F and you want a 4/3mm or thicker.

Back Zip vs Chest Zip

Back-zip wetsuits are easier to get in and out of, so they dominate entry-level and mid-range suits. Chest zips reduce flushing and sit flatter against your back, but the trade-off is a tighter entry. For most surfers, a back zip with a taped neck closure keeps you warm without the squeeze.

Getting the Right Fit

A women's wetsuit should fit snug everywhere with no air pockets or bunching. If you can pinch more than an inch of neoprene at the lower back, size down. Women's wetsuits vary in sizing by brand, so always check the brand's chart before ordering.

Kona also carries men's wetsuits, youth wetsuits, and women's rashguards. Browse our full wetsuits lineup for every style and thickness. Grab a leash and a beginner board before your next paddle out.

Frequently Asked Questions About Women's Wetsuits

Can women wear men's wetsuits?

Technically yes, but the fit will be off. Men's cuts are broader in the shoulders with a longer torso, creating gaps that flush cold water. Women's wetsuits are shaped for a shorter torso and wider hips, keeping the seal tight.

What is the difference between a spring suit and a full wetsuit?

A spring suit leaves arms and legs exposed, fine in warm water but cold gets in fast once temps drop. A full suit seals wrist to ankle. Pair a spring suit with a soft-top in summer.

What do you wear under a wetsuit?

Most surfers wear a swimsuit or bikini underneath. A rash guard adds warmth in cooler water. Skip cotton, and avoid anything with zippers or hardware that could irritate skin under neoprene.

How long does a wetsuit last?

Surfing three to four days a week, expect two to three years from a wetsuit. Weekend surfers can stretch that closer to four. Rinse with fresh water after every session, dry folded over a wide hanger out of direct sun, and skip the dryer.
